Questions You Should Ask Every Venue Once A Gig Is Offered

So you’ve just been booked to play a gig at a local venue, what questions should you be asking them before the show to maximise the opportunity and make sure everything runs smoothly?

What gear is provided?

Music Gear

Different venues will provide different equipment. Bigger venues may provide a full PA and backline, while smaller venues like pubs and bars may not provide anything at all. It’s up to you to make sure you’re prepared for the gig and know exactly what you need to bring along.

Do you help with promotion?

As you probably know by now, you’re going to need to do a lot of self-promotion when you’re starting out. However, most venues can help you out. They should put up posters promptly to let punters know about your show. Identifying how much promotion the venue will do early on will help you to know how much of the weight is going to be on you shoulders.

How do I get paid?

Identify how you will be paid and get it in writing as soon as possible. Is it a split of the covers? Can you sell merch and does the venue expect a percentage? Is it a flat fee? When will you be paid? Agreeing this information is crucial.

What insurance coverage does the venue carry?

Accidents happen and unfortunately, equipment can get stolen. It’s very important to find out whether you’re covered by the venues insurance or whether you need your own.

Do I get a guest list?

Find out if you’re able to have a guest list for anybody associated with you, such as a photographer. You may also want to find out if you can get hold of the names and email addresses of those who buy tickets, so you can add them to your own mailing list.

If you ask these questions for all of your future gigs you’ll have yourself covered and will come across as a true professional, making venues likely to book you again.
