Think Small – More Success by Doing Less

In a world where we are always taught to think big, especially in creative industries, we can often fail to reach our goals and easily feel discouraged. In this blog post we explore some ways that you can think small, in order to achieve more.

Cut back social media use

Promoting your music on social media is absolutely key, but many fail by using too many networks and using them too much throughout the day, with no real plan. Instead, focus all of your efforts on three social networks of your choosing and assign a set time each day to do this. For example, you could do all of your social media promotion in the morning, and forget about it for the rest of the day, allowing you to focus on other tasks. This way, you will use the time you do spend on social media more effectively and it will have less impact on the rest of your day.

Use less tech

As musicians, we love buying new tech and having endless possibilities. However, by cutting this back we can earn more and open up more opportunities. If you have a huge pedal board, an extensive drum kit and complicated vocal set up, your load ins and sound checks will take significantly longer. Meaning your pay for the gig will work out lower per hour than if you had a simple set up that takes less time to get running. Being able to run a simple set up can also open up more gig opportunities, such as festivals where the changeover time must be minimal. Finally, using less tech gear can actually help you to write, produce and think more creatively.

Quit your side projects

If you have multiple musical projects on the go it’s all too easy to feel scattered and you won’t be able to give any of them your all. If you cut back, you can focus all of your energy on one project and you will have more success as a result. It will open up more time for engaging with your audience, networking, promotion and collaborations.

Have smaller goals

It’s easy to have one huge and often vague goal of success. What can be harder is reining that in. Giving yourself small, easily achievable goals. It’s okay to dream big, but a more effective way to get there is to set one small goal everyday, consistency is key.

If you can make your life simple by cutting out unnecessary habits and streamlining your workflow, you will see more success. Dream big, but think small!
