In a historic milestone for the UK music industry, Women in CTRL has unveiled its highly anticipated 2024 Seat at the Table report, showcasing a remarkable surge in the representation of women on trade association boards. The report highlights a transformative shift, with women now occupying 52% of seats, a substantial leap from 32% recorded in the inaugural 2020 report and 42% in 2021.
As part of Women in CTRL’s steadfast commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity within the music sector, this marks the third edition of the Seat at the Table report. The comprehensive analysis delves into the presence of women in executive roles, including CEO and Chairperson positions, across both UK Music and the 10 music trade associations constituting the overarching trade body.
Key Findings:
52% Representation: Across the UK Music trade bodies, women now hold 52% of board positions, demonstrating a significant progression from 32% in 2020 and 42% in 2021.
Global Majority Representation: 16% of board members hail from a global majority background, witnessing a substantial rise from 3% in 2020 and 7% in 2021.
Universal Improvement: Every organization featured in the report has experienced an increase in gender representation on their boards.
50% Gender Representation: Over 55% of organizations have successfully achieved gender parity, boasting 50% or more female representation on their boards.
Additional Findings:
CEO Representation: A notable advancement reveals that 45% of Chief Executives across the UK Music trade bodies are women, up from 20% in 2020 and 2021.
Chair Diversity: The report highlights a positive shift with 27% of Chairs across UK Music Trade Bodies being women, up from 0% in 2020 and 9% in 2021. Notably, 18% of Chairs in 2024 are women from a global majority background.
Executive Teams: Over 50% of executive teams across the organizations are comprised of women and non-binary individuals, with 14% representing women from a global majority background.
The report commends notable achievements and progress by organizations such as BPI, recognizing individuals like Jo Twist, Sophie Jones, MJ Olaore, and YolanDa Brown, along with Naomi Pohl as the General Secretary of the Musicians Union. Additionally, PPL is acknowledged for its strides in board diversity and EDI strategy.
